Warwick Farm Races
About The Warwick Farm Race Track
The Warwick Farm Racecourse is one of the most prestigious racetracks
in New South Wales. It is managed by the Australian Jockey Club and it
is located 30km away from Sydney GPO. Warwick hosts about 15 race
meetings every year including the spring and autumn racing carnivals.
AJC bought the racecourse back in 1922 and the first race to be held here was in 1925 where 25,000 spectators attended the event. In 1940, Warwick was used for a different purpose when Allied powers occupied the racecourse and used it as a camp. During this time it was called Camp Warwick or HMS Golden Hind. In the 1950s, a portion of Warwick was restructured to make room for an automobile racing course. Warwick became a racing venue not just for horses but for cars as well, and from 1960 up to 1973 it accommodated both horse-racing events and automobile racing events. The Australian Grand Prix was even held here in the years 1963, 1967, 1970 and 1971.
The racetrack is about 1,937 metres in circumference and it has a 326
metre straight with a sharp turn near the 1200 metre marks. Racing
experts consider the racetrack as a tight track which is an advantage to
front runners but for the horses from behind they would have to run
very wide. Warwick also has two grass training tracks and one sand
track.
There are several race events here with different starts. There are
starts for the 1100m, the 1000m, 1200m, the 1400m, the 1600m and the
2200m race meetings. Those who would like to attend the races can easily
walk from the Warwick Farm railway station to the racecourse seeing
that it is just a stone's throw away from the train station.
Most of the race meetings are held during the autumn and spring carnival seasons.
